Depot Bell #6 Taxi

It is funny how the music of our youth can have such a powerful hold on us in our later years. Speaking for myself, I would say that many of my favorite songs are the songs that were played on the radio between 1979 and 1984. Maybe that’s not the most notable period for musical artistry, but what can I say? I’m a product of my times. My theory is that a person’s formative musical period lasts five years, and then, while some new material might sneak in in the ensuing years, it never really has the power of music during your five year block.

While I’ve shared this theory with my friends over the years, it really hasn’t occurred to me until today that the same might hold true for a person’s style of humor. I mention this because, through the power of YouTube, I have become reacquainted with the brilliant T.V. show, Taxi. And, while watching the clips I’ve included below, I came to the conclusion that there is nothing on television today that is anywhere near as funny as this show, at least to me.

Maybe it is a coincidence, or maybe it always works out this way, but I also happen to love sit coms from the same period, 1979-1984. M.A.S.H., WKRP in Cincinnati, Cheers, Family Ties, The Cosby Show. But none of these great shows compares to my all time favorite.

I’m including some favorite clips here because, one, it has been a really crappy week of bad economic news, and two, I’ve started my second round of interferon this week and I’m in the mood for a laugh.

This first clip is the final part of an episode where Jim Ignatowski has a premonition dream that Alex is going to die. Alex of course does not take it seriously, but superstitious Louie, god love him, shows uncharacteristic concern and tries to save Alex’s life.

This second clip is just a very funny moment with Jim Ignatowski. Stay with it until the end. It has a great payoff.

Finally, this last clip might be the king daddy of them all. Jim goes to take his driving test. Very funny.
